SUVs and Roof Crushes
Each year in the United States, more than 10,000 people are killed in SUV rollover accidents. These alarming statistics prompted the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to conduct a study to see if there was a practical way to bring that death toll down. The institute found that roofs that easily crush during impact were a major factor in the high rate of deaths. The group concluded that more than 200 deaths in the year 2006 could have been prevented. This means that stronger roofs have the potential to cut the risk of injuries by one-third. This study is significant, because it opposes the viewpoint of the auto industry, which insists that the strength of a vehicle's roof does not make a difference if an SUV rolls over. Although the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has been discussing new standards for roof strength for years, those standards have not been updated in almost three decades. The auto industry defends itself by saying that they comply with these weak standards. What's worse is that auto manufacturers are actually encouraging the NHTSA to impose even weaker standards with roofs. This will inevitably result in more injuries and deaths.
