Pedestrians and Crosswalk Risks
A task as simple as crossing the street can end up a tragedy. Every year in America, thousands of people are seriously injured—even killed while venturing from one sidewalk to the next. A large percentage of those fatalities are children and the elderly.
When crossing the street, pedestrians are so vulnerable that even a car or truck moving slowly can have catastrophic results if it hits you. In fact, nearly 80,000 people suffer serious injuries when hit by a vehicle, and almost 5,000 are killed, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.
But aside from pedestrian-vehicle accident, thousands of non-vehicular pedestrian accidents also arise. Some causes of these include:
- Sidewalk defects
- Potholes and debris on the sidewalk and roadways
- Poor property or road maintenance
All drivers must exercise reasonable caution and care while driving. Sadly, not all drivers do. Some of the leading reasons for pedestrian accidents include a driver’s:
- Failure to observe posted speed limits
- Neglect to yield the right of way to pedestrians at cross walks
- Inattentiveness
- Refusal to obey traffic signs or signals
- Failure to signal while turning
- Disregard for weather or traffic conditions
- Operation of a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol
